Reflection: Rafting through Big Gore Canyon, Colorado

Describe your most memorable vacation.

My son was just old enough and finally tall enough. My father and I signed him up for white-water rafting along the Colorado River in the summer of 2018. His father and I had been separated since he was an infant, so to take him on such a beautiful and exciting adventure was important to me.

It truly is breath-takingly beautiful along that river in the summer months. Despite the chill of the water, it is temperate and peaceful in the stretches between the level 2 and 3 rapids.

We opted for the slightly rougher ride for the excitement of it. My son had the time if his life clinging to me from his place in the center of the inflatable raft, laughing as we were splashed by the rapids, jumping with me from a 40-foot cliff onto the freezing water with the fearlessness of youth.

It was a perfect day of sun, adventure, and picnicking by the fast-moving current of the scenic Colorado.
